Dinalungan: Where the Eagles Soar

Dinalungan, Aurora – High above the dense, emerald canopy of the Northern Sierra Madre, a shadow glides with silent, predatory grace. This is the Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi), the “King of Birds,” and its presence in the skies of Dinalungan is a testament to the wild, untouched majesty that still thrives in the heart of Aurora Province.

The King of Birds: A Living National Treasure

The Philippine Eagle is more than just a bird of prey; it is a symbol of the nation’s heritage and biological wealth. Standing at three feet tall with a wingspan that can reach seven feet, it is one of the largest and most powerful eagles in the world. Its shaggy crest of feathers, piercing blue-grey eyes, and massive, dark beak give it an appearance of ancient, regal authority.

However, this majesty is matched by its scarcity. With only an estimated 400 pairs remaining in the wild, the Philippine Eagle is critically endangered. A single pair requires roughly 7,000 to 13,000 hectares of forest to thrive and raise a single chick every two years. Because of this, the eagle is often called an “umbrella species”—by protecting the habitat of one eagle, we inadvertently protect thousands of other species of flora and fauna that share its home.

Dinalungan: A Sanctuary in the Sierra Madre

In recent years, the municipality of Dinalungan has emerged as a vital stronghold for this magnificent raptor. Sightings within the Dinalungan-Casiguran-Dilasag (DICADI) landscape have sparked hope among conservationists and locals alike.

The rugged terrain of Dinalungan, characterized by primary dipterocarp forests and limestone formations, provides the perfect nesting grounds for the eagle. Here, the “King” finds the seclusion and prey—such as flying lemurs and palm civets—necessary for survival.

Where the King Roams: Natural Attractions and Sightings

Travelers and researchers visiting Dinalungan can explore specific areas where the biodiversity is so rich that sightings are increasingly documented:

  • The DICADI National Park Boundary: This vast protected area is the primary corridor for the eagle. The dense, old-growth forests here provide the massive trees required for nesting.
  • Mount Hunyango: A prominent peak in the local skyline, its high-altitude ridges are frequent scouting grounds for eagles looking for thermal updrafts.
  • Bulawan Falls: While famous for its multi-tiered cascades and crystal-clear basins, the surrounding limestone cliffs and ancient canopy are prime habitats where the eagle’s distinct call can sometimes be heard echoing through the canyon.
  • The Abuan River Watershed: The lush vegetation along the riverbanks supports a high concentration of the eagle’s natural prey, making the surrounding forest a critical hunting ground.
  • Secluded Coastal Ridges: Rare sightings have been reported along the ridges overlooking the Pacific, where the forest meets the sea, showcasing the eagle’s dominance over both mountain and coast.

Sustainability and the Value of Guardianship

At Aurora.ph, our core value of Sustainability is directly tied to the preservation of these apex predators. The presence of the Philippine Eagle in Dinalungan serves as a “green lung” indicator for the entire province.

Our commitment to Guardianship means recognizing that the survival of the eagle and the prosperity of our communities are one and the same. Through the “Preserve to Prosper” vision, we advocate for:

  • Habitat Protection: Defending the Sierra Madre against illegal logging and encroachment to ensure the eagles have a place to nest.
  • Wildlife Monitoring: Supporting local “Bantay Gubat” (Forest Guards) and community-led monitoring programs that track eagle sightings and protect nesting sites.
  • Eco-Tourism with Respect: Encouraging visitors to appreciate Dinalungan’s biodiversity through bird-watching and trekking that strictly follows “Leave No Trace” principles.

The Call to Action: Become a Forest Steward

The sight of a Philippine Eagle soaring over the Sierra Madre is an experience that stays with you forever—a reminder of the raw power of nature. But this sight is a privilege that requires our active protection.

We invite travelers and residents to participate in our “Adventure with Respect” campaign. By supporting sustainable local guides and staying in eco-verified accommodations, you are contributing directly to the conservation funds that keep these forests standing and these eagles flying.

This feature is part of the Aurora.ph “Wild Heart” series, showcasing the extraordinary biodiversity of our province.
