Baler: Where Every Wave Tells a Story
Baler, the capital of Aurora Province on the eastern coast of Luzon, is a vibrant municipality known for its rich history, natural beauty, and cultural heritage. Cradled between the Sierra Madre mountain range and the vast Pacific Ocean, Baler is most celebrated as the birthplace of surfing in the Philippines, thanks to the iconic waves of Sabang Beach that first drew local and international surf enthusiasts in the 1970s. Beyond its surf culture, Baler is steeped in history – from the Siege of Baler during the Spanish era to its deep ties with Philippine revolutionaries – and offers breathtaking attractions such as waterfalls, rock formations, and pristine shorelines. Today, it stands as both a historical gem and an adventure hub, blending heritage with the thrill of the ocean.

Historical Background of Baler
Pre-Colonial Era
- Originally inhabited by Dumagat and Agta indigenous groups.
- These early communities lived sustainably off the land and sea, practicing fishing, hunting, and forest gathering.
Spanish Colonial Period
- Founded in 1609 as a Franciscan mission by Fr. Blas Palomino.
- Remote and isolated due to the Sierra Madre mountains, which made Spanish rule light compared to more accessible lowland areas.
- The early town was subject to natural disasters, such as floods and tsunamis.
Tromba Marina of 1735
- A tsunami (called “tromba marina”) destroyed the original Baler settlement, killing many.
- Survivors climbed Ermita Hill, which remains a historical and spiritual site today.
Siege of Baler (1898–1899)
- A group of 54 Spanish soldiers held out inside the San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Church for 337 days, unaware that the Philippines had already declared independence.
- Known as “The Last Stand of the Spanish Empire”.
- The surviving Spanish troops were later honored for their loyalty, and the event is remembered as a key moment in Spanish-Filipino relations.
American & Commonwealth Era
- Under American rule, Baler became part of Tayabas Province (later Quezon).
- President Manuel L. Quezon, a key figure in Philippine independence and the first President of the Philippine Commonwealth, was born in Baler in 1878.
World War II
- Like much of the Philippines, Baler saw Japanese occupation and local resistance during the war.
Modern Period & Provincial Status
- Sometime in 1972, Steve Scott, a surfer staying at Subic Naval Base, visited the Eastern seaboard of Luzon and discovered the surfing waves of then remote town of Baler; hence, the moniker “Birthplace of Philippine Surfing” has been tagged to the town since.
- In March 1976, filming began for the Francis Ford Coppola movie, Apocalypse Now where bomb attack scenes including the surfing sequence took place in Baler Bay. The film is credited with creating a surfing culture and unintentionally transformed Baler into a major surfing destination, as locals learned to surf after the film’s production crew left all the surfboard props behind.
- In 1979, Aurora became an independent province, and Baler was designated as its capital.
- The town has since evolved into a surfing and ecotourism hub, attracting local and international tourists.
Modern-Day Baler
Today, Baler is best known for:
- Surfing at Sabang Beach – especially popular from October to February.
- Historical landmarks:
- Ermita Hill – both a historical site and a scenic lookout
- Dicasalarin Cove – a hidden beach surrounded by cliffs and mountains
- Cultural heritage – blending Spanish, Filipino, and indigenous influences
